A Golden Spring Session: Family Maternity Portraits in the Wildflowers
Spring in the Central Valley is nothing short of magical. The wildflowers bloom in vibrant shades of yellow, white and purple, and sometimes orange, the hillsides are lush and green, and the air is filled with the promise of new beginnings.
It’s the perfect time to capture those fleeting moments of beauty—both in nature and in life.
Two years ago, I had the privilege of photographing a stunning on-location family maternity session in early April. My client wanted something unique and breathtaking, so we headed up to my favorite spot in Three Rivers, just outside of Visalia. The timing couldn’t have been better—the hills were blanketed in wildflowers, creating the dreamiest backdrop for her portraits.
She chose two gowns from my client closet, a gorgeous lavender gown and a delicate white lace dress, both of which complemented the natural setting beautifully. Her twin girls looked absolutely adorable in their pink and lavender dresses, and Dad tied it all together with his cream button-down shirt and slacks. The result? A timeless, elegant session that celebrated their growing family in a way that felt both personal and magical.
Here’s one of my favorite things about wildflower sessions: they’re versatile. Whether you’re celebrating the beauty of pregnancy, updating your family portraits, or capturing your children’s fleeting childhood moments, the wildflowers provide a stunning canvas for your story.

What to Wear to Your Wildflower Session
One of the most common questions I get from my clients is, “What should we wear?” Choosing the right outfits can elevate your photos and ensure you look your best against the vibrant wildflower backdrop. Here are some tips to help you plan the perfect wardrobe for your session:
Stick to Soft, Neutral, or Pastel Colors
The wildflowers are already bold and colorful, so it’s best to wear colors that complement, rather than compete with, the setting. Think soft pastels, earthy tones, and neutrals like:
- Cream, beige, or white
- Lavender, blush pink, or dusty blue
- Sage green or light gray
These tones blend beautifully with the natural scenery and create a timeless look.
Avoid Busy Patterns
While florals and patterns can be lovely, they may clash with the wildflower background. Instead, opt for solid colors or subtle textures like lace, embroidery, or knits to add interest without being overpowering.
Consider Flowing Fabrics
For women, flowing fabrics like chiffon, tulle, or lace add a sense of movement and elegance to your photos. Long dresses or skirts that catch the breeze can create a dreamy, ethereal feel.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
If you’re planning a family session, aim for outfits that coordinate rather than match. For example:
- Mom in a soft lavender dress
- Dad in a cream button-down with khakis
- Kids in pastel pink or sage green outfits
This creates a cohesive look without being too uniform.
Accessorize Thoughtfully
Hats, scarves, or flower crowns can add a touch of personality to your photos, but keep accessories simple to avoid distracting from the overall scene.
Comfortable Shoes Are Key
We’ll likely be walking through grassy or uneven terrain, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes. Neutral flats, sandals, or boots are great options. If you prefer heels, bring a pair of flats to wear while walking to the location.
Use My Client Closet
Not sure what to wear? Don’t worry! My Client Closet is full of carefully curated pieces that photograph beautifully. Whether you’re looking for a flowing maternity gown or sweet dresses for your little ones, I’ve got you covered.
Bonus Tip: Prepare for the Outdoors
Since wildflower sessions are outdoors, it’s a good idea to bring:
- A blanket or shawl for sitting poses
- Bug spray and sunscreen
- Water and snacks for little ones
