A Lemoore Newborn Photographer’s Guide for Fresno, Hanford & Visalia Families
There is something incredibly fleeting about those first days with your baby.
The tiny curled-up stretches. The flaky little fingers. The way they fit perfectly against your chest. Before you know it, your newborn begins to wake up more, stretch out, and change almost daily.
One of the most common questions parents ask is:

“How old should my baby be for newborn photos?”
The short answer is this:
The ideal time for newborn photos is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old.

As a newborn photographer serving families throughout Lemoore, Hanford, Fresno, and Visalia, I help guide parents through this process every week, so if you are wondering when to book, what happens if baby arrives early, or whether your baby is already “too old,” this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
Why 5 - 14 Days Old Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos
During the first two weeks after birth, babies are typically:
- Sleepier
- More flexible and naturally curled
- Easier to soothe into poses
- Less sensitive to movement
- More comfortable being wrapped and gently posed
This is the stage when we can safely create those peaceful, sleepy newborn portraits most parents fall in love with.
After about two weeks, babies often become:
- More alert
- More sensitive to touch and movement
- More prone to baby acne or colic discomfort
- Stronger and less naturally curled
That does not mean you missed your chance.
It simply means your session may look a little different, with more awake moments, stretches, eye contact, and connection-focused images.
And honestly? Those moments can be beautiful too.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

The best time to reserve your newborn session is actually during pregnancy, ideally when you are around:
20–34 weeks pregnant
Many parents are surprised to learn that newborn sessions are booked based on your due date, not your baby’s actual birthday.
Because babies arrive early, late, and sometimes unexpectedly, most newborn photographers only take a limited number of due dates each month to leave flexibility in the calendar.
Waiting until after birth can make it much harder to secure availability, especially during busy seasons. If you are due October through December, the earlier you can book, the better.
What If My Baby Is Already Older Than Two Weeks?
Please do not panic.
I photograph older newborns often, especially for:
- NICU graduates
- Families who had difficult recoveries
- Parents who simply did not realize they needed to book ahead
Even babies who are 3 to 8 weeks old can still have beautiful newborn portraits created.
The session simply becomes more baby-led and connection-focused.
With older newborns, we may focus more on:
Parent connection
Wrapped setups
Natural expressions
Eye contact
Tiny details
Genuine interactions
Your baby does not have to sleep through the entire session for meaningful images to be created.
What Happens If Baby Arrives Early or Late?
This is one reason why booking ahead matters.
Once your session is reserved, we stay flexible around your baby’s actual arrival date.
After birth, parents simply reach out within the first 24 to 48 hours, and we finalize the exact session day based on how baby and mom are doing.
Whether your little one arrives at 37 weeks or 41 weeks, your spot is already prepared for you.
What If My Baby Won’t Sleep?
This is one of the biggest worries new parents have.
Please know:
You are not expected to have a “perfect” baby for your session.
As an experienced newborn photographer, I guide the entire session with patience, soothing techniques, wrapping, feeding breaks, and a baby-led approach designed around your little one’s comfort and safety.
Some babies sleep deeply.
Some want extra cuddles.
Some stay awake and curious.
Beautiful images can come from all of it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photos

How long does a newborn session take?
Most full newborn sessions last between 2–4 hours to allow time for feeding, soothing, and settling baby comfortably.
Can siblings and parents be included?
Absolutely. Family connection is one of the most meaningful parts of your newborn session.

What should my baby wear?
Most newborns are photographed wrapped or in simple neutral pieces provided by the studio.
What if my baby has acne or flaky skin?
That is completely normal and can be gently retouched while still keeping your baby looking natural.
Do you provide props and wraps?
Yes. Everything is prepared for you, including wraps, blankets, headbands, bonnets, and styling guidance. Gowns are also available for Moms to use for parent poses.
Ready to Reserve Your Newborn Session?
The newborn stage passes faster than most parents expect.
One day, your baby will no longer fit curled against your chest the same way they do right now.
These photographs become part of your family’s story. The images your child grows up seeing on your walls. The album they hold years from now and realize just how deeply they were loved from the very beginning.
If you are currently expecting, the best time to reserve your newborn session is before your baby arrives.
