Planning Your Maternity Portrait Experience

Choosing a maternity photographer comes with a lot of questions. Here are answers to the ones I'm asked most often by mothers.

When should I schedule my maternity session?

The best time to photograph maternity portraits is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this stage, your baby bump is beautifully defined, and most expecting mothers are still comfortable enough to enjoy their session.

Because my calendar often books several months in advance, I recommend reserving your maternity session during your second trimester.

Not sure when you'll be 28 to 34 weeks? Try my Maternity Session Date Calculator to find your ideal session window.

What should I wear for my maternity session?

Don't worry about figuring it out on your own. Every maternity session includes a planning consultation where we'll discuss your style, the artwork you'd like to create, and the overall look you're hoping for.

You'll also have access to my curated client wardrobe, featuring elegant gowns, bodysuits, flowing fabrics, and accessories selected to photograph beautifully. If you'd like to incorporate your own dress or a meaningful item, we'll happily include that as well.

The goal is for you to feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful.

Do you provide maternity gowns?

Yes! One of the biggest advantages of working with a full-service maternity photographer is having access to a professionally curated wardrobe.

My collection includes a variety of designer gowns, timeless silhouettes, fitted and flowing styles, fabrics, and accessories in colors that photograph beautifully and complement every stage of pregnancy.

You'll be able to choose your favorites during your consultation, so everything is ready before your session.

Can my husband and children be included?

Absolutely.

Your maternity session celebrates your growing family, not just your pregnancy. Partners and siblings are encouraged to participate, and I'll guide everyone through natural posing that highlights the connection and anticipation you're experiencing together.

Many families tell me these become some of their favorite portraits.

I've never had professional photos taken. Will you help me pose?

Absolutely. Almost every mother who walks into my studio tells me she's nervous because she doesn't know how to pose. You don't have to. I'll guide you every step of the way, from choosing your wardrobe to flattering poses and natural expressions, so you can simply enjoy the experience. My goal is for you to leave feeling beautiful, confident, and excited to see your portraits.

I'm not feeling my best during pregnancy. Should I still have maternity portraits?

Many mothers tell me they almost skipped maternity portraits because they didn't feel like themselves.

Pregnancy changes your body in incredible ways, and it's normal to feel uncomfortable or self-conscious at times. My job is to create portraits that celebrate your strength, your beauty, and the incredible life you're growing, not to make you fit into someone else's idea of perfection.

Through thoughtful styling, flattering lighting, and gentle posing, I'll help you see yourself the way your family already does.

What should I look for when choosing a maternity photographer?

Choosing a maternity photographer is about much more than finding someone who takes beautiful pictures.

Look for someone whose style reflects how you want to remember this season, who has experience working with expecting mothers, and who offers a guided experience from planning through finished artwork. Ask to see complete galleries rather than just highlights, and consider whether they help with wardrobe, posing, and designing artwork for your home.

These portraits become more meaningful with every passing year, so it's worth investing in an experience that helps you preserve this chapter beautifully.

How much do maternity portraits cost?

Your session fee reserves your date and includes your planning consultation, wardrobe access, and portrait session.

After your session, you'll choose the artwork that best fits your family and home. Most clients invest between $1,500 and $5,000 on heirloom albums, custom wall art, archival prints, and digital images.

Should I book my maternity and newborn sessions together?

If you're planning newborn portraits, I highly recommend reserving both sessions during your pregnancy.

Booking together ensures availability around your due date and allows us to create a cohesive collection documenting your journey from pregnancy through your baby's first days. Planning ahead also gives us time to discuss your style, artwork goals, and how you'd like to display your portraits throughout your home.

Many families love seeing their maternity and newborn portraits displayed together because they tell one beautiful story.

What happens after my maternity session?

After your session, I'll carefully hand-edit your portraits before inviting you back to the studio for your ordering appointment.

This is one of my favorite parts of the experience. Together, we'll view your images for the first time and design artwork specifically for your home. Whether you're dreaming of a statement wall display, a handcrafted heirloom album, or a collection of framed portraits, I'll guide you through every option so you can choose pieces your family will enjoy for generations.

What if my baby arrives before my maternity session?

Babies don't always follow the calendar, which is one of the reasons I recommend scheduling your maternity portraits between 28 and 34 weeks whenever possible.

If your little one decides to arrive earlier than expected, please reach out as soon as you can. Every situation is different, and I'll do my best to work with your family's circumstances and discuss the options available.

Do you photograph mothers with high-risk pregnancies?

Absolutely. Every pregnancy is unique, and many of the mothers I photograph have experienced infertility, pregnancy loss, complications, or have been diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy.

Your health and your baby's well-being always come first. If your healthcare provider has approved maternity portraits, I'll work with you to create a session that's comfortable for your individual needs. That may mean choosing seated poses, limiting movement, scheduling shorter sessions, or selecting a location that's easy to access.

If you've been placed on bed rest or have activity restrictions, I recommend discussing your session with your healthcare provider first. Once you have their guidance, we'll work together to determine the safest approach.

Why are maternity portraits so important?

Maternity portraits are about more than documenting what you looked like while you were pregnant. They're about preserving the beginning of your child's story.

Years from now, these images become a reminder of the anticipation, hope, excitement, and overwhelming love that filled your family before your baby ever took their first breath. Long after the nursery has changed and tiny clothes have been packed away, your portraits remain as a tangible reminder of where your family's next chapter began.

For many parents, these become some of the most treasured pieces of artwork in their home because they tell a story that can never be recreated.
