A Girl's Confidence Peaks at 9 Years Old

“Girls’ self-esteem peaks when they are 9 years old, then takes a nosedive,” clinical psychologist Robin F. Goodman writes on the New York University Child Study Center Web site.

I remember being so self-conscious between the ages of 10 and 16 years old. I changed schools 3 times during that time frame and was the "New Kid". I never felt like I fit in and would have done just about anything to fit in with the cool kids if they had given me a chance. But, I was awkward and when puberty hit, so did the acne. I was teased - not only for the acne, but also because of my "large" nose. All I wanted was to feel loved and beautiful. Thankfully, I had a wonderful church group of girls my same age and we learned that beauty is from within and we are all beautiful children of a God that created us for good.

That's not to say that I still didn't want to look like the beautiful girls on TV or in magazines. I would have loved to have experienced a day where I was treated like a beautiful princess or model.

Now I have 3 beautiful daughters of my own. My oldest is 10. I can already see her confidence taking the nosedive that Dr. Goodman speaks about above. She hates public speaking and doubts her abilities even though she is talented at SO many things. She's a wonderful artist, is extremely smart, caring, and strong. After much prayer, I decided that I wanted to treat not only her, but girls all over, to a portrait experience in which they are treated like a most precious, beautiful girl and feel like a model.
